The A-10’s effectiveness as a close air support platform resonates deeply with U.S. ground forces, who have frequently benefited from the A-10’s strafing runs employing its iconic 30-millimeter Avenger Gatling cannon.
The Avenger cannon, with its distinctive sound, stands out as an impressive weapon in itself. It is a hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-type cannon, capable of firing an astounding 3,900 bullets per minute while maintaining a remarkable level of accuracy.
Indeed, the A-10 is fundamentally crafted around the Avenger weapon system, integrating numerous features with careful consideration, such as its unique landing gear design strategically accommodating the cannon.
The aircraft’s design takes into account the substantial recoil generated by the Avenger, positioning the cannon in a manner that counteracts its firing force. The weight of the bullets used by the cannon, approximately 4,000 pounds, is also factored in, to the extent that in the absence of rounds, ballast would need to be added to the aircraft’s nose for proper balance.
Additional A-10 specifications, tailored specifically with the Avenger in mind, include slats seamlessly incorporated into the wing to prevent stalls during attack runs. These slats also play a crucial role in diverting gun gas underneath the wings, mitigating potential damage to the engine.
