“Troopers from the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment (2-82 FA), part of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, marked a historic moment on September 17, 2020. They initiated the first firing session with the state-of-the-art M109A7 Paladin, showcasing the cutting-edge capabilities of this advanced artillery system. This noteworthy event was captured through the lens of U.S. Army photographer Sgt. Caleb Franklin.

The M109, a stalwart in artillery, has undergone a series of upgrades, culminating in the latest iteration known as the M109A7, previously recognized as the M109A6 Paladin Integrated Management (PIM). Retaining the core armament and cab structure of its predecessor, the M109A7 introduces a modernized chassis, sharing common components with the Bradley vehicle. This enhanced chassis not only enhances survivability but also streamlines compatibility with existing systems in the Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT), thereby reducing operational sustainment costs through the replacement of outdated components.

Positioned as the solution to long-term readiness and modernization requirements for the M109 family of vehicles, the M109A7 undergoes a comprehensive redesign and production plan, leveraging the most advanced technologies available today.

The imagery captures the unloading of three cutting-edge M109A7 Paladin Artillery Systems and M992A3 Field Artillery Ammunition Support Vehicles from the trains, seamlessly transitioning them to the Army Prepositioned Stock-2 Coleman worksite. This visually signifies a leap forward in artillery capabilities, embodying the commitment to excellence and technological prowess within the U.S. Army’s artillery divisions.”
