Being the most advanced fighter aircraft originating from Europe, the Eurofighter Typhoon boasts remarkable multi-role strike capabilities. Its power is further amplified through the integration of advanced electronic warfare systems. Thanks to a collaboration between Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Hensoldt, the Luftwaffe will enhance its Eurofighter Typhoons with upgraded electronic warfare capabilities. On October 18, the Israeli and German partners signed a cooperation agreement to combine Rafael’s Sky Shield airborne electronic warfare pod with Hensoldt’s Kalaetron attack technology, bolstering the aircraft’s defensive and offensive potential.
Sky Shield operates in frequencies ranging from one to 18 GHz. It comprises a digital interferometer signal detection system, a digital radio frequency memory technique generator, and modular solid-state steering transmitters for jamming. Rafael asserts that their system is fully compatible with 4.5-generation fighters. An important aspect is that Sky Shield utilizes the same interface as Rafael’s Litening targeting pod, which is also used by the Eurofighter Typhoon, reducing integration time and costs.
The compact size of the Sky Shield pod allows for its incorporation into various aircraft sizes, including small, medium, and large combat aircraft. The system offers significant coverage in a 360-degree radius across a wide range of frequencies. With exceptional direction-finding accuracy, the digital receiver can track complex emitters effectively.
Reportedly, Sky Shield provides protection not only for a single aircraft but for an entire fighter formation. The system acts as an electronic warfare shield, preventing enemies from targeting friendly forces. It is claimed to be effective against modern advanced radar threats and capable of operating in dense electromagnetic environments. Combined with close support and escort jamming systems like Sky Shield and the Litening Pod, fighter jets can detect and neutralize adversary radar signals, allowing for swift suppression or destruction of surface-to-air missile batteries and clearance of the air-denial axis.
Not only is the symbol for the Luftwaffe, the Eurofighter Typhoon is also being used by the Royal Air foгсe, Austria, Spain and Italy. With its characteristic delta wing design, the Typhoon is a very ⱱeгѕаtіɩe aircraft at both high and ɩow speeds. The digital fɩіɡһt control system and superior aerodynamic design also help this fіɡһteг to maintain high maneuverability in a паггow range. When сomЬіпed with the remarkable electronic warfare capabilities of the Sky Shield, the Typhoon will further develop its inherent рoweг.
