Conjoined twins with a single belly and no anus were delivered via Cesarean section at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the early morning on Monday. The twins consist of a male and a female, and while they have separate limbs, bodies, and heads, they share a joined belly without an anus. The mother, Anguri Begum, 35 years old, wife of Rubel Hossain from Bidirpur village under Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila, was identified as the mother of the conjoined twins.
On Tuesday at 2:00 PM, Anguri Begum and her conjoined twin babies were discharged from the hospital and returned to their village home. Earlier, on Monday morning, Anowara Begum, Anguri Begum’s grandmother, was seen weeping while holding the conjoined babies on her lap in ward-22. Relatives of Anguri, as well as attendants of other patients, gathered around the bed to catch a glimpse of the conjoined twins.
According to Anguri’s relatives, she was initially admitted to a clinic in Chapainawabganj when she experienced labor pain. After undergoing an ultrasound test, the clinic referred her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted at around 2:00 am on Monday. The conjoined twins were then delivered through a Cesarean operation in the early morning.
Anowara Begum mentioned that the twins possess two hands, two legs, and two heads with complete facial features (mouth, lips, eyes, skull, hair, ears, etc.), but they share a single belly. Their anus is not visible, and their sex organs are not distinct, although the doctors have determined that one twin is male and the other is female.
Anowara Begum further revealed that her daughter Anguri already has two sons aged 18 and 15 years old. With the arrival of the conjoined twins, the family is unsure of how to handle the situation. Anowara expressed that they are financially disadvantaged and lack the means to provide proper treatment for the babies. They plan to go to Dhaka after collecting some funds.
Dr. Nargis Shamima Swapna, the on-duty physician at the Gynae ward of RMCH, declined to comment on the babies’ physical condition. Dr. Saiful Ferdous, Deputy Director of RMCH, informed that the conjoined twins have a single belly and require surgery to address the issue of the missing anus. They have been advised to travel to Dhaka with the babies as soon as possible.
